Continuing professional education for teachers
Some 30 000 teachers are to be offered advanced continuing professional education at higher education institutions. The Government has set aside SEK 2.9 billion for the period 2007-2010 to allow teachers to receive 80 per cent of their current pay while studying.
A boost for teachers
Nearly a quarter of all teachers will receive further education over the next few years. Some 30 000 fully qualified teachers will be offered a chance to study at a higher education institution. During their studies they will receive 80 per cent of their current pay. At the same time, the Government is putting SEK 1 billion into supplementary education for teachers who are not fully qualified, continuing professional education for teachers of Swedish for immigrants (SFI) and training for school heads. In all, the Government is investing SEK 3.6 billion in education for teachers.
"A boost for teachers" also includes stricter rules on qualification requirements for teachers. In future, teachers will be required to have education both in the subject and for the age groups that they are to teach. The Government has appointed an inquiry chair with instructions to present a proposal on authorisation of teachers in spring 2008.
The Government wants to promote a more peaceful study environment in schools. The Government bill Improving order, security and peace and quiet for studies in school (2006/07:69) proposes to give teachers greater powers, such as the right to confiscate mobile phones and to remove bullies. Nobody - neither students nor teachers - should need to be afraid of going to school.
