Continued Swedish presence in New York

An honorary consulate-general will be established in New York, USA, on 1 January 2010. This will mean a continued Swedish presence in New York, which will be able to support Swedish export companies and promote US investment in Sweden. Swedish support to Afghanistan to remain long-term

The mission of Swedish forces in Afghanistan is to be extended to 31 December 2010. This is proposed in the Bill to be passed by the Government today. Together with the increase in Swedish development assistance and greater EU involvement, the Government wants to help to ensure that responsibility for the countrys development can be transferred to the Afghan authorities in due course.

Biljana Plavsic will be conditionally released

Today the Swedish Government has decided on conditional release of Mrs. Biljana Plavsic. She is to be released on 27 October 2009. Thereby the enforcement of the sentence in Sweden will be terminated.

Sweden takes over Chairmanship of Barents Euro-Arctic Council

At a meeting in Murmansk on 15 October, Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt will take over the two-year Chairmanship of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council from his Russian colleague, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov.

Measures with reference to the Laval judgment

The Government today made a decision on a proposal to be referred to the Council on Legislation concerning measures in response to the European Court of Justice judgment in the Laval case.
"I am glad that we have found a solution that combines the Swedish labour market model with existing Community law in a well-balanced way. It is possible to retain the Swedish model while respecting Community law" says Minister for Employment Sven Otto Littorin.

Fredrik Reinfeldt to receive Lula da Silva for EU-Brazil Summit

On Tuesday 6 October, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, together with the President of the Commission José Manuel Barroso, will host an EU summit with Brazil's President Lula da Silva. Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt and Minister for the Environment Andreas Carlgren will also participate in the meeting. After the EU summit, Fredrik Reinfeldt and Lula da Silva will also meet for bilateral talks.

Fredrik Reinfeldt to receive Ban Ki-moon

On Thursday, 1 October Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt will receive United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Stockholm. The meeting will focus on the current situation in the climate negotiations and the road to a new global climate change agreement in Copenhagen in December.

Development Days in Älvsjö to attract thousands

Preparations are well under way for the Swedish Presidency's largest meeting - the European Development Days (EDD), open to everyone who is interested. Three themes will be the focus of this event: democracy, climate and the economic crisis. Many prominent people will also be taking part.

September 17 Minister for Trade Ewa Björling launched a special initiative to put the skills of foreign-born entrepreneurs to good use, with a long-term view to increasing trade with the rest of the world.
