Architecture, form and design

The Riksdag has decided that the following six objectives are to apply to central government policy in the area of architecture, form and design:

Architecture, form and design
  • Good conditions must be created for the development of architecture, form and design
  • Quality and aesthetic aspects must not be subordinated to short-term financial considerations
  • Cultural and aesthetic values in existing environments must be used actively and reinforced
  • Interest in architecture, form, design and public environments of high quality must be strengthened and broadened
  • Construction, interior design and procurement undertaken or financed by public bodies must handle quality issues in an exemplary way
  • Swedish architecture, form and design must be developed in fruitful international cooperation

In the same year that the Riksdag took a decision on these objectives - 1998 - the 'aesthetic regulations' were also added to the Planning and Building Act, the Roads Act and the Railway Construction Act.

A large number of government agencies and institutions that are accountable to the Government are active in the area of architecture, form and design. Those accountable to the Ministry of Culture are:

The Swedish Museum of Architecture (Arkitekturmuseet)

The National Museum of Fine Arts (Nationalmuseum)

The Swedish Society of Crafts and Design (Föreningen Svensk Form)

The National Public Art Council (Statens konstråd)

The Röhsska Museum of Design and Decorative Arts (Röhsska museet)

The National Swedish Handicraft Council (Nämnden för Hemslöjdsfrågor)
