Government agencies

The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs' area of activities includes 56 agencies, including 21 County administrative boards, responsible for the day-to-day operations of public administration. The Government establishes objectives, guidelines and resource allocation for agency activities but does not decide how the agencies apply a law, nor does it interfere with the decisions they make.

• Alcoholic Beverages Product Range Board (Alkoholsortimentsnämnden)

  The Alcoholic Beverages Product Range Board ensures the state retail monopoly functions in a non-discriminatory manner.

• Arbitration Tribunal for Occupational Injury Compensation (Skiljenämnden i vissa trygghetsfrågor)

  The Arbitration Tribunal for Occupational Injury Compensation hears disputes concerning the application of the Agreement on Personal Injury Compensation of 31 January 1986, and appeals against decisions made by the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency, for example in accordance with the Act on State Compensation for Non-material Damage (1977:266).

• County administrative boards (Länsstyrelserna)

  The 21 County administrative boards are charged with a range of tasks, including implementing national objectives, co-ordinating the different interests of the county, promoting the development of the county, establishing regional objectives and safeguarding the rule of law in every instance.

• Dental and Pharmaceutical Benefits Agency (Tandvårds- och läkemedelsförmånsverket, TLV)

  The Dental and Pharmaceutical Benefits Agencydecides which medicinal products are to be included in pharmaceutical benefits and also determines the price of these products. The Board also decides which medicinal products come under the high cost protection scheme for dental treatment and which dental treatment should be subsidised by the state, along with reference prices for different dental treatments.

• Government Disciplinary Board for Higher Officials (Statens ansvarsnämnd)

  The Government Disciplinary Board for Higher Officials examines matters concerning disciplinary responsibility, reports for prosecution, dismissal, suspension and compulsory medical examination regarding government employees in senior positions.

• Lantmäteriet

  Lantmäteriet is the Swedish mapping, cadastral and land registration authority.

• Medical Products Agency (Läkemedelsverket, LV)

  The Medical Products Agency inspects medicinal products and also provides producer-independent information and treatment recommendations.

• Medical Responsibility Board (Hälso- och sjukvårdens ansvarsnämnd, HSAN)

  The Medical Responsibility Board deals with qualification issues, i.e. revocation of licences or other qualifications, probationary periods, and applications for a new licence or other qualification.

• National Board of Appeal (Statens överklagandenämnd)

  The National Board of Appeal is the agency that hears appeals against employment decisions of government authorities. The Board also examines some decisions concerning total defence conscripts and training in protection against accidents.

• National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen)

  The National Board of Health and Welfare supervises, develops, coordinates and provides education in health care and medical services, and social services.

• National Board of Institutional Care (Statens institutionsstyrelse, SiS)

  The National Board of Institutional Care is responsible for compulsory care of young people and adults in special institutions.

• National Government Employee Pensions Board (Statens tjänstepensionsverk, SPV)

  The National Government Employee Pensions Board is one of Swedens largest providers of pension administration.
  Pension administration involves applying the rules of pension agreements and computing and paying the different components of the pension.

• National Government Service Pension and Group Life Insurance Board (Statens tjänstepensions- och grupplivnämnd)

  The National Government Service Pension and Group Life Insurance Board was set up in 1988 under an agreement on Government Service Group Life Insurance (TGL-S). The task of the Board is to examine questions of exemption from the rules on group life insurance under the TGL-S agreement and exercise the employer authority in accordance with certain government service pension provisions. The Board secretariat is based at the National Government Employee Pensions Board.

• National Housing Credit Guarantee Board (Statens bostadskreditnämnd, BKN)

  The National Housing Credit Guarantee Board administers government credit guarantee programmes for housing development.

• National Property Board (Statens fastighetsverk, SFV)

  The National Property Board administers state-owned property and land at 73 locations in 69 countries around the world. In 44 of these countries the board manages a Swedish Embassy.

• Special Board for the Public Sector (Offentliga sektorns särskilda nämnd)

  In its statement, the Special Board for the Public Sector must, when requested by a negotiating party, specify whether it believes that a collective agreement would in any particular point violate political democracy.

• Swedish Agency for Disability Policy Coordination (Myndigheten för handikappolitisk samordning, Handisam)

  The Swedish Agency for Disability Policy Coordination has the strategic task of monitoring Swedish disability policy.

• Swedish Agency for Government Employers (Arbetsgivarverket)

  The Swedish Agency for Government Employers is a membership organisation for Government agencies. It has 250 member agencies in the central Government sector. Other members include closely associated organisations, mostly foundations.

• Swedish Agency for Health and Care Services Analysis (Myndigheten för vårdanalys)

  The Swedish Agency for Health and Care Services Analysis assesses and analyses both publicly and privately funded health and medical services, including dental care, and certain aspects of social services from a patients' and citizens' rights perspective. It reports on the quality and efficiency of activities and assesses the effects of Government reforms and initiatives.

• Swedish Agency for Public Management (Statskontoret)

  The Swedish Agency for Public Management supports the Government in evaluating and following-up state and state-financed activities.

• Swedish Commission for Government Support to Faith Communities (Nämnden för statligt stöd till trossamfund, SST)

  Swedish Commission for Government Support to Faith Communities distributes state grants to Swedish denominations - except the Church of Sweden.

• Swedish Council for Strategic Human Resources Development (Kompetensrådet för utveckling i Staten, Krus)

  The Swedish Council for Strategic Human Resources Development is a Government specialist support agency tasked with helping the Government in matters concerning strategic skills provision in central government administration. This means that the Council is to draw the Governments attention to the need for joint support measures in the area, but also that it is to provide agencies with specialised help in acquiring the right skills for fulfilling their important social functions both in the short term and the long term.

• Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research (Forskningsrådet för arbetsliv och socialvetenskap, FAS)

  The Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research supports and initiates basic and needs-based research within the fields of the labour market, work organisation, working environment, public health, health services and social welfare.

• Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment (Statens beredning för medicinsk utvärdering, SBU)

  The Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment examines the methods used in health care and provides objective evaluations of their costs, risks and benefits.

• Swedish Fortifications Agency (Fortifikationsverket)

  The main role of the Swedish Fortifications Agency is to manage the defence estate consisting of built estate such as airfields, naval bases, HQs, barracks and depots, as well as land including training and testing areas for the Swedish defence sector.

• Swedish Geotechnical Institute (Statens geotekniska institut, SGI)

  The Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI) is responsible for building up a body of Swedish geotechnical expertise and for dissemination of this information.

• Swedish Inheritance Fund Commission (Arvsfondsdelegationen)

  The Swedish Inheritance Fund supports non-profit organisations and other voluntary associations wishing to test new ideas for developing activities for children, young people and the disabled. The Swedish Inheritance Fund Commission is the name of the working group that decides how support is granted.

• Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control (Smittskyddsinstitutet, SMI)

  The Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control monitors the epidemiologic situation in the country.

• Swedish Intercountry Adoptions Authority (Myndigheten för internationella adoptionsfrågor, MIA)

  The Swedish Intercountry Adoptions Authority has overall responsibility for adoptions from other countries.

• Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning (Boverket)

  The Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning is the agency for community planning, urban development, building and housing.

• Swedish National Institute of Public Health (Statens folkhälsoinstitut, FHI)

  The Swedish National Institute of Public Health follows up, evaluates and disseminates knowledge about methods in the public health sphere and supervises in the areas of alcohol, narcotics and tobacco.

• Swedish Pensions Agency (Pensionsmyndigheten)

  The Swedish Pensions Agency is responsible for all national pensions.

• Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan)

  The Social Insurance Agency provides financial security in the event of illness, disability and old age as well as for families with children.

• Swedish Social Insurance Inspectorate (Inspektionen för socialförsäkringen, ISF)

  The Swedish Social Insurance Inspectorate provides an independant supervisory function for the Swedish social insurance administration.

• Swedish Water Supply and Sewage Tribunal (Statens va-nämnd)

  The Swedish Water Supply and Sewage Tribunal deals with cases under the Act concerning public water and sewage systems and the Act concerning public heating systems.

• The Ombudsman for Children in Sweden (Barnombudsmannen, BO)

  The Ombudsman for Children in Sweden monitors the rights and interests of children and young people.
