Dag Hammarskjöld's ideas live on, 50 years after his death

On 18 September 2011 it will be fifty years since Dag Hammarskjöld, Swedish diplomat and second Secretary-General of the United Nations, died in a plane crash in Zambia. Hammarskjöld was a visionary leader who, at a critical time in the history of the UN, did much to strengthen the role and nature of the organisation. Today he is still considered one of the UN's most significant Secretaries-General, and his stamp can still be clearly seen in many aspects of the organisation's work.
