Christian Leffler to top job in EU External Action Service

Christian Leffler has been appointed by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton to a top post in the EU's new European External Action Service (EEAS), as Managing Director for the Americas (North, Central and South America and the Caribbean).

Most recently, Mr Leffler has held the post of Deputy Director-General at the Commission's Directorate-General for Development. In 2010 he has also acted as an adviser to the High Representative on issues concerning the creation of the EEAS. Prior to this he was Head of Cabinet to Commission Vice President Margot Wallström.

Leffler began his career path at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. He served at the Embassies in Egypt and France before going to Brussels in 1991 to participate in Sweden's EU accession negotiations. He has worked on institutional issues and external relations at the European Commission since 1996.
