Biståndsminister Gunilla Carlssons tal vid en ceremoni i Stockholms stadshus i samband med 10-årsjubileet av "World's Children's Prize for the Right of the Child"
Your Majesty Queen Silvia, this year's winners of the World's Children's Prize, prize laureates and distinguished guests.
It is a great pleasure to represent the Government of Sweden here tonight. I am especially happy to see all the children on the stage - representing millions of children from different parts of the world and who are also the true experts on children's situations and children's rights. You have tonight shared with us remarkable passion, strength and courage.
Children's rights and children's protection are indeed fundamental to the continued development of our societies, they are our future. The Convention on the Rights of the Child provides us with a framework for the protection of children. But we also have to take the responsibility to act in accordance.
I therefore wish to congratulate all Children's Prize Winners over the last ten years and, of course, this year's winners of the award 'Decade Child Rights Heroes' - Mr Nelson Mandela and Ms Graça Machel - who have been elected by 7.1 million children. All of you have made invaluable contributions to the Rights of the Child over the past decades, in different and often very practical ways. You have all had the well-being of children at heart.
Thank you!
